Check Out This Extended Gameplay Preview of Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokemon Legends Arceus 1 (1)

Pokémon Legends: Arceus isn’t your standard Pokémon game.

Set long before the events of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, when the Sinnoh region was known as Hisui, Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes the series into action RPG territory. Your goal appears to be the same as in pretty much all Pokémon games: complete a Pokédex. Though this time you’ll be a pioneer, creating the first in the region. And of course, as the name suggests, a mythical Pokémon called Arceus will play a significant role in your journey.

Launching 28th January exclusively on Nintendo Switch, much has remained unknown about Pokémon Legends: Arceus, however. But Nintendo has today remedied that by providing an extended gameplay preview.

With Mount Coronet at its centre, the extended gameplay preview has revealed that Hisui has numerous areas to explore, each with their own Pokémon ecosystem. Obsidian Meadows, for example, is full of fields and forests. It also reveals a focus on collecting materials and crafting new items.

But it’s not all wilderness and aimless exploration. At the Jubilife Village you’ll be tasked with Survey missions. It also serves as the headquarters for the Galaxy Team, and is home to numerous services you can make use of. There’ll be a shop where you can buy items, for example, and a barber where you can change your hairstyle, its colour, and even your eyebrows. Character customisation doesn’t end there, either. As you play through Pokémon Legends: Arceus, you’ll unlock a variety of outfits to change into.

Out in the open world, you’ll be able to see wild Pokémon going about their business. When they see you, some might become aggressive, while others may run away. Using primitive Pokéballs, you can try to catch a wild Pokémon unaware of your presence if you wish. If you fail, however, then you might have to engage it in combat.

As ever, the Pokémon you’ve captured can be deployed to do battle on your behalf. When a Pokémon battle commences, you’ll find that it’s turn-based, as usual. Switching things up is the ability to switch between two styles: Strong or Agile. In Agile style, your attacks will be weaker but you might be able to attack more often. And so, in Strong style, it stands to reason that you’ll hit harder but might find your next move delayed a little.

Sometimes you’ll encounter powerful Alpha Pokémon, with unsettling eyes that glow red. Engage them in battle and you’ll need to use all of your skills to emerge victorious. As part of your surveying duties, you’ll also need to find and calm down enraged Noble Pokémon. Before you can engage them in battle with your captured Pokémon, you’ll need to weaken them with items such as bombs first.

And finally, it appears you won’t have to travel everywhere on foot. Using a number of special Pokémon, exploring Hisui will be a stress-free experience. You’ll be able to quickly move across land with a Wyrdeer, soar through the skies with a Hisuian Braviary, and travel across rivers and seas with a Basculegion. It all sounds like a lot of fun.

If you want to find out more about what awaits you in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, give the extended gameplay preview a watch below. Running at just over 13 minutes, it’s very insightful, and makes us more excited for the game than ever before.
