What Difficulty Should You Play God of War On?

God of War

Now available on PC and well as PlayStation consoles, God of War is considered by many as one of the best games ever made.

If you have a PlayStation console or a PC capable of playing it, you’d be wise to do so, especially if you love action adventure games. Though like most games, if you do decide to play God of War, you might find yourself wondering which difficulty to play it on.

God of War has four difficulty levels to choose from, all available from the outset. They are: Give Me a Story, Give Me a Balanced Experience, Give Me a Challenge, and Give Me God of War. Most players will probably want to select Give Me a Balanced Experience for their first playthrough, which is fair but can sometimes be challenging. On this difficulty level most encounters can be overcome without any trouble, but bosses can pose a real threat, and you will be punished if you let yourself be surrounded.

For that reason, those new to action games or just wanting to play through God of War for its story might want to choose Give Me a Story. On this setting, enemies are weaker, more easily stunned, and deal less damage. It means that players should be able to make their way through the story with relative ease, even if they don’t have the best gear or abilities.

On the flip side, those that want a real challenge might want to choose the Give Me a Challenge or Give Me God of War difficulties. On Give Me a Challenge, enemies are stronger, meaning they hit harder, are less prone to being stunned, and take less damage from your attacks. Give Me God of War then takes things to the next level, making it only really for those who have mastered the game.

One thing to note is that you can change the difficulty level at any time by going into the options menu. So, if you chose a difficulty and then find the game to hard or too easy, you can easily change it for something more appropriate. There are no achievements or trophies linked to the difficulty level either, so you won’t be penalised in any way. The only exception to this is Give Me God of War difficulty, which is only accessible when starting a new game.
