How to Heal in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

It’s all too easy to take damage in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and so you might be wondering how to heal Link.

In the top-left of your screen in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll see a row (or multiple rows) of hearts. These represent Link’s health: if there are no hearts left, then Link will die. And so, if Link’s in danger and your hearts are depleting, you’re probably going to want to heal. But how do you heal in Tears of the Kingdom?

Thankfully, healing Link is straightforward, but you’ll need to have the right items in your inventory. It isn’t as simple as drinking a potion or visiting a fairy, like in earlier Zelda games. Here, you’ll need to have ingredients or meals with healing properties.

Apples are the first items you’ll find that have healing properties. You’ll find apples on trees or on the ground near trees. Pick them up with A to add them to your inventory. To use one, open up your inventory by pressing ‘+’. Use L and R to navigate to the ‘Materials’ tab. Now, move to the apple, and press ‘A’. On the menu that pops up, select eat.

Apples aren’t the only items that heal hearts: you can hover over everything in your inventory and it will show you how many hearts (or segments of a heart) it will heal. But to heal a significant amount, you’re going to have to cook meals.

Like in Breath of the Wild, Link can get creative with ingredients, cooking over a campfire. Combining various ingredients that have healing properties will make meals offering much better benefits. Experiment as you play, and you’ll soon have a stash of easy to cook meals that heal Link when he’s hurt.
