The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

What Happens When You Die in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Are you wondering what happens to Link if you die in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Here’s what you need to know.

You’re probably going to die quite a lot as you play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Try as you might, the odds are stacked against you. There’s an endless amount of ledges to fall off, enemies out to end you, and contraptions you make are likely to backfire and take you out. And so, when you die in Tears of the Kingdom, what happens?

If Link’s health falls down to zero, you’ll see a ‘Game Over’ screen. You’ll have two options: continue from last save or return to main menu. Don’t panic: you’re probably thinking “but I haven’t saved in hours!”. It’s going to be okay: Tears of the Kingdom autosaves regularly.

That means that when Link dies, chances are you’ll be revived only a few minutes away from where you were. Providing you die in the open world, that is. Any enemies you were fighting against have likely been revived, however, and so you’ll need to kill them again. But you shouldn’t have to backtrack too much.

If you died in a shrine, however, you’ll start right back at the start of the shrine. But don’t worry: most of the progress you’ve made throughout the shrine – any doors you’ve unlocked or objects you’ve interacted with, for instance – will be saved. It’ll likely just be a case of running back to where you were.

So, the good news is, if you die in Tears of the Kingdom, you likely won’t lose too much progress. You’ll revive close to where you are, and you’ll just need to make your way back to carry on what you were doing. Just maybe be a bit more careful next time, yeah?
