Fable’s new combat trailer has the coolest use of magic I’ve seen in a long time
Playground Games has dropped a new extended Fable trailer, focusing on the game’s combat, and it’s looking rather tasty. Even better, it doesn’t end with the news that Fable has been delayed a third time, it’s still on course for a February 2027 release.
Fable’s new combat trailer kicks off with the hero taking on that fantasy staple, skeletons, accompanied by pal Humphry. Despite what Scary Movie 2 says about skeletons just being bones, I’d be breaking the land speed record running in the opposite direction.
Fortunately, as you can see in the below trailer, the protagonist has brought along a hammer, so they’re able to dish out some serious crushing damage. But pretty soon they’re tackling ghosts, zombies and a menacing boss. To be fair, they’ve willingly walked into a abandoned mine, which as any fantasy fan knows, are always haunted. But a quest is a quest.
Aside from showcasing some of Fable’s foes, the video illustrates how easy it is to mix up offensive techniques; the hero dishes out magic, weapon strikes and ranged attacks with barely a pause. It’s not a million miles from The Witcher 3’s action, where Geralt blends close-up combat with ‘signs’ (basically spells).
But, much as I appreciate The Witcher 3, I have to tip my hat to Fable for what has to be one of the coolest magical combat moments I’ve seen in ages. The hero uses magic to levitate a group of minor enemies and, with them flailing in mid-air, turns to dispatch a bigger foe. That job done, they then slam the original group back down to the ground and wade in to scatter their bones.
Admittedly, it’s not as striking as, say, conjuring a giant monster or having a volcano erupt beneath a bad guy’s feet. But it’s the epitome of nonchalance. “Oh, you want to murder me? Let me put you on hold, I’ll get back to you when I’ve got a minute.” The moment I get my hands on Fable, I’m going to put all my skill points into that spell, just so I can prolong the humiliation.
