Think Doom is heavy on carnage? The Serious Sam series prides itself on throwing literal hordes of foes at you and now the latest entry in the franchise, Serious Sam: Shatterverse, has an August 31st release date.

The twist is that it’s a co-op multiplayer first-person roguelite, unlike the main series, which offers a more linear level-by-level experience. While you can play the game solo, it’s geared toward multiplayer; a group of alternate Sams team up to take on the forces of villain Mental, while hopping across universes.

Does that mean we’re finally going to get the chance to dispatch Mental once and for all? We doubt it. Maybe Serious Sam: Shatterverse will feature a showdown with one Mental variant, but it’s become a running joke that the series will never actually conclude the storyline that began with Serious Sam: The First Encounter.

Serious Sam: Shatterverse is set to offer the frantic FPS action that has become the series’ trademark, with the aforementioned roguelite twist. You’ll also be able to pick up and apply all manner of boosters to make it a fairer(ish) fight. And, as showcased in the trailer above, there are plenty of familiar foes to annihilate.
