Long-time PC gamers will remember when arcade schmups rarely made their way to the platform, so it fell to indie developers to craft their own shoot-em-ups. Raptor: Call of the Shadows is one such classic and, thanks to Steam’s Summer Sale, you can pick it up for less than £1.

It’s less space-based than Tyrian, but Raptor: Call of the Shadows remains one of the best shoot-em-ups we’ve played, unleashing laser-assisted hell on a range of flying foes, loading up on power-ups between levels. And, unlike some bullet-hell games, taking a single hit isn’t immediately game over.

In short, it’s a hell of a lot of fun as, between pick-ups and pre-level shops, you turn your craft into a death-dealing nigthmare. And, while developer Scott Host has a remix in the works, this is currently the best way to experience it.

This is the 2015 re-release, instead of the DOS-based 1994 version. The only thing missing is a 16:9 mode, but you’ll have such a blast you’ll forget you’re playing it in a window. Fast reflexes are an advantage, especially if you’re tackling it on one of the higher difficulty levels, where the screen can be jam-packed with foes.

Thanks to the Steam Spring Sale, you can snap up Raptor: Call of the Shadows for just £0.67/$0.84. You’ll have to hurry, though, as the sale finishes on the 26th of March. You can also get Scott Host’s other Steam schmup, Demonstar, for a measly £0.44 here.
