Megaton Rainfall, the best Superman game you’ve never played, is less than £5 on Steam

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Megaton Rainfall which, while it doesn’t bear the Superman licence, is the closest we’ve come to getting a perfect Superman game and, thanks to the Steam Winter Sale, it’s less than £5/$6.
Typically, the problem with Superman games is that they struggle to handle a character who, Kryptonite and magic aside, is essentially invincible. One of the most infamous attempts was Superman 64, which featured a Metropolis filled with Kryptonite fog, damping down Supes’ powers.
On reflection, it sounds ridiculous, but how do you up the stakes when you’re playing as the most powerful hero in the DC universe? The answer, as Megaton Rainfall developers Pentadimensional Games decided, is to make every death count.
Megaton Rainfall’s alien superhero is completely immortal, with powers that parallel Superman; super-speed, laser vision, and so on. There’s nothing in the game that can kill them. But if enough people die, either at your hands or at the tentacles of the alien invaders, it’s game over.
It forces you to treat the seriously destructable city with kid gloves; get careless with that beam of yours and you can carve through a skyscraper, killing hundreds. Your foes, who make a beeline for whatever city you’re defending, deploy weapons which can wipe out whole city blocks in one go, and you’re the only thing standing in their way. No pressure.
Aside from roaming around Earth, you can also soar off into the cosmos and explore other planets, barren as they typically are. Throw in a VR mode and you’ve got a not-Superman game that’s an absolute steal at just £4.43/$5.91 on Steam.

You’ll have to be fast, though; the Steam sale ends this January 5th. Megaton Rainfall is also available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, though it’s not currently reduced on those platforms.
