It’ll probably not come as a surprise to you, but it looks like we’ll be waiting until at least 2018 to see Kingdom Hearts 3.
In a Square Enix document that was published in February this year, the company lay out their upcoming titles for ‘Financial Year 2017’ and ‘Financial Year 2018 and beyond’. FY2018 covers the period from April 2017 to March 2018, but in the document, anything that’s set to come out in 2017 is clearly marked as such. See the screenshot below – Final Fantasy XII and Dragon Quest XI are both clearly marked for release in 2017.

Kingdom Hearts 3 though? Not so much. Along with ‘Marvel IP License’ and Final Fantasy VII Remake, it sits in the ‘and beyond’ section with absolutely no indication of when we’re likely to see it. But it’s certainly not going to be any time this year.
Perhaps we’ll find out more about the game at this year’s E3 – but seeing as the release date is still some way off, it’s very unlikely that Square Enix will release any solid details about when we can finally expect to catch up with Sora, Goofy and Donald.

Kim's been into video games since playing Dizzy on her brother's Commodore 64 as a nipper. She'll give just about anything a go, but she's got a particular soft spot for indie adventures, roguelikes and puzzle games. If she's not gaming, she's probably got her nose in a book, and you can find her bookish musings on her blog at What The Book. She's also freelanced in several places, writes about Lego at That Brick Site, and is constantly thinking about new projects she'll undoubtedly quickly abandon.
