2. Soul Eater
Soul Eater is somewhat of an acquired taste. The unique art style really sets it apart from a lot of animes, but at its core, this series tackles the themes of friendship, death, and power.
In this show, we follow the three main characters — Maka, Black Star, and Death the Kid — along with their “weapons”, Soul, Tsubaki, and the twins Liz and Patti. They all attend Death Weapon Meister Academy, where they learn how to become master weapons and meisters. Soul can turn into Maka’s scythe, Tsubaki switches between being Black Star’s chain scythe and shuriken (although she does have several forms), and Liz and Patti are Kid’s faithful guns.
Together the kids attend class and learn how to become better fighters in order to rid the world of the bad magic that is starting to infect people. Full of an array of fun characters, the world of Soul Eater is vibrant and colourful, and every episode has a beautiful setting. The comedic representation of Death himself is refreshing, and each of the people we become attached to has their own struggles to overcome.
Soul Eater is fun, it’s different, and it’s full of lessons we can all learn, whether we’re facing demons or not.
