HBO has revealed that Kaitlyn Dever has been cast as Abby for season two of the TV adaptation of The Last of Us.

Dever is an Arizona-born American actress whose existing credits include Booksmart, Justified, Unbelievable, Dopesick and Dear Evan Hansen. She’s no stranger to stardom, then, having begun acting in her teenage years. Interestingly, she’s also done voice acting for just one video game: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (the role of Cassie). On X, Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann said he was “stoked” to work with Kaitlyn again.

Druckmann isn’t the only member of The Last of Us family (as he put it himself) to be wishing Dever the best. Laura Bailey, the voice actor behind the video game incarnation of Abby, shared her support on X, saying she was “excited to see Abby’s evolution”. Admittedly, we are too.

But it’ll be a while until we get to see Dever in action as Abby. Filming hasn’t yet begun on The Last of Us season two, and it’s not set to air on our screens until 2025. Damn. Those who’ve played The Last of Us Part II know that Dever has some big shoes to fill: Abby is a key part of the story, and her character was very divisive when the game launched back in 2020.

We’re looking forward to seeing how the story plays out on television, and if Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are anything to go by (who’ll be reprising their roles as Joel and Ellie), we have faith in HBO’s casting choices.

Editor in chief // Kim's been into video games since playing Dizzy on her brother's Commodore 64 as a nipper. She'll give just about anything a go, but she's got a particular soft spot for indie adventures. If she's not gaming, she'll be building Lego, reading a thriller, watching something spooky or... asleep. She does love to sleep.
