The best racing games on PS Plus Extra

Are you looking for the best racing games playable on PS Plus Extra or Premium? You’ve come to the right place. Sony’s subscription service offers access to a library of hundreds of games at no extra cost — and that library contains a number of racing games. We’ve picked out the best of them right here.

We’ve played pretty much all of the racing games included in PS Plus, and so we’ve put together a guide to the titles we think are the best. We’ve been sure to include a ride range of racing games too, from arcade-inspired fun to more serious driving sims. Regardless, they all get our seal of approval.

This article was first published in July 2022 and has been periodically updated since.

1. Assetto Corsa Competizione (PS4 & PS5)

Assetto Corsa Competizione PS5 2

If you’re a racing sim fan, Assetto Corsa Competizone is 100% the best racing game on PS Plus Extra. This is the most serious racing sim available on consoles, challenging players to master control of their vehicles, learn the ins-and-outs of tracks, and devise the perfect pit strategy.

Ultimately, it won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but those seeking a realistic experience will be in their element. Thanks to a PS5 native version, owners of Sony’s latest console also benefit from improved visuals and performance.

2. Hotshot Racing (PS4)

Hotshot Racing

We do wish Bandai Namco would make a new Ridge Racer game, but until then we’ll make do with Hotshot Racing, which is perhaps the next best thing. This arcade racing game is all about boosting and drifting, and so you’ll need to be able to do both effectively to succeed.

Grand Prix mode offers up multiple cups for you to compete in, and there’s a suite of accompanying modes, too. No matter which you chose you’ll have a good time thanks to Hotshots Racing’s enjoyable gameplay and gorgeous art style.

3. Monster Truck Championship (PS4 & PS5)

Monster Truck Championship 2 (1)

“Good” and “monster truck” haven’t been words that have gone together in the world of video games. Monster Truck Championship bucks the trend, however. It’s not perfect, but Monster Truck Championship is the best racing game featuring monster trucks yet, and thanks to PS Plus Extra, you can try it for yourself without having to fork out any extra money.

Jump into its career mode and you’ll find a variety of events to compete in, and as you make your through them you can make your truck truly your own. The PS5 native version even makes it look and perform a bit nicer.

4. Need for Speed Unbound (PS5)

Need for Speed Unbound Review 2 (1)

Need for Speed is one of the most-loved arcade racing game series, and the most recent, Need for Speed Unbound, is available on PS Plus Extra. It sports an unusual animation style, but you’ll find the same high-octane street racing here that the series is known for.

With multiple difficulty levels and plenty of settings to tweak, it also feels like one of the most accessible games in the series too. If police chases are spoiling your fun, you can tweak your experience or turn down the difficulty to reduce the frequency you’ll be chased. Ultimately, though, no matter what your skill level or what difficulty you play on, you’re going to have a riot as you play through Need for Speed Unbound.

5. FIA European Truck Racing Championship (PS4)

FIA European Truck Racing Championship 1 (1)

We’ve had monster truck racing, but what about actual truck racing? It may be an unusual choice, but FIA European Truck Racing is a real thing — and this video game rendition of the sport is surprisingly good fun. Its uniqueness makes this a refreshing experience: something rather rare in the racing game space.

Perhaps what makes FIA European Truck Racing stand out is that, as you might expect, racing in a truck feels different than racing in a car. The weight and size of the vehicle is something that’s displayed well in the game, and you’ll have to monitor extra things, like the heat of your brakes. If you fancy something a bit different from the norm, this is undoubtedly one of the best racing games on PS Plus Extra and Premium.

6. Redout 2 (PS4 & PS5)

Redout 2

With no WipEout game available on PS Plus Extra, the next best racing game is Redout 2. Unashamedly inspired by the WipEout series, this zero-gravity racer is fast-paced, colourful and sharp. If you fancy a racing game with a sci-fi edge, it’s definitely worth your time.

When we reviewed it in 2022, Redout 2 had some issues that made the experience a little less exhilarating than it should be. But numerous patches since launch have improved it, making it a very enjoyable racer indeed.

7. The Crew 2 (PS4)

When it comes to open world racing games, the Forza Horizon series rules the roost. Alas, it’s not available on PlayStation. The Crew 2 is though, and while it pales in comparison, you can still have plenty of fun with it.

Letting you loose on a massive map, The Crew 2 gives you the freedom to progress how you see fit. You might want to race tuner cars, but you could also choose dirt bikes, boats, or even planes first. Even racing is actually optional; you can just explore and complete challenges if you wish. It might not be as good as its newer counterpart, The Crew Motorfest, but there’s still a lot to like here.

8. Trackmania Turbo (PS4)

Trackmania Turbo

Fancy racing against the clock rather than having other drivers on the track with you? Trackmania Turbo is the game for you. In this outlandish racing game you’re presented with one rollercoaster-like track after another. Your goal is to complete each one as fast as possible, but to get the top times you’re going to have to practice and really brush up your skills.

You can play in multiplayer, too, if you’d prefer — and there’s also VR support. Just be warned that the latter might make you feel a bit sick.

9. Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 6 (PS4 & PS5)

Most of the racing games on PS Plus Extra are of the four-wheeled variety, but not all of them. If you’re a motorbike fan, you should probably give Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 6 a try.

The latest entry in this series is easily the best yet, with improved visuals and the best physics so far. It also packs in all the features you’ve come to expect, such as online multiplayer, a career mode, and the ability to create your own tracks. It won’t be for everyone, but those prepared to put in the time to master its unique gameplay will love it.

10. Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R (PS4 & PS5)

Fast & Furious Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R 3 (1)

Last but not least is Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SHIFT3R, a racing game based on the Spy Racers cartoon. Despite being aimed at children, there’s a lot to like here: a fun, cartoonish art style, an engaging story, and some genuinely fun races.

It is simple, though: Rise of SHIFT3R is more akin to a kart racer than a typical arcade racing game, making it more accessible to younger players. It means you’ll find power-ups on the tracks, which can be just as frustrating as being hit by a shell in Mario Kart. If you don’t mind, though, there’s plenty of fun to be had, especially if you’ve got younger kids.
