Top 10 Memorable Video Game Soundtracks

memorable video game soundtracks

I’ve been in a very nostalgic mood recently and I think it’s because the year is coming to a close. Having recently written a reminiscent piece, I felt I should share some more of my most memorable gaming moments. And what better way than through the medium of music?

Each song represents a specific moment in time which really resonates with me, so before you click play, I’ll try and set the scene and explain the significance underlying each song. Without further ado, here are 10 memorable video game soundtracks I’ll never forget…

10. “Aldia, Scholar of The First Sin” – Dark Souls II

I understand that many of you have never delved into the lore surrounding Dark Souls, let alone play the game; I find it utterly fascinating. It’s ambiguous, mysterious and ridiculously cryptic – rather like its brother Bloodborne too.

This track plays in the final boss fight of Dark Souls II, bearing a tragic tone of what could have been. Aldia wanted to accomplish something noone had ever attempted before, but in the end it failed.

Whilst Dark Souls II on the whole has an incredibly memorable video game soundtrack, this one track stands out as I think it conveys its message perfectly, and this quote from Aldia after his defeat is echoed throughout:

“I lost everything, but remained here, patiently.
The throne will certainly receive you.
But the question remains…
What do you want, truly?
Light? Dark? Or something else entirely…”

9. “Rainbow Road” – Mario Kart Double Dash

Yes, I know it’s a bit of a mood change. But a good one at that! The reason this track is one of my most memorable video game soundtracks is because it evokes so many great memories of playing Mario Kart with friends and choosing Rainbow Road before instantly regretting it. Flying off the track in all manner of angles, getting the mushroom and boosting yourself off the track, getting a Bullet Bill and still ending up flying off the track, great fun.

For me, the Rainbow Road song captures the magic of Mario Kart and above all on a more personal level, it reminds me of being back in Japan as a kid having a blast.
