2. “Wings of Kynareth” – The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

It’s no secret that I love The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It was hard to choose one track from the very memorable video game soundtrack as each track is incredibly moving in its own right, but this one separates itself slightly from the pack because it’s the one which reminds me the most of wandering through the majesty of Cyrodiil.
“The music blends seamlessly with the environment, creating moments of wonder and reflection as you stare at the stars or quietly pay your respects to the gods. If you’re suddenly ambushed in your serenity, the music is quick to impart a sense of threat and urgency.”
1. “Nameless Song” – Dark Souls

I released my iron grip from the controller in my hands and laid it to rest on the table in front of me. My mind worked its way through encounters with all manner of monstrous demons. Flashes of rage flit by and vanishing instantly as I remember the intricate and awe-inspiring environments I had traversed which had led me to this moment. I’d defeated Gwyn The Lord of Cinder and rekindled the flame to keep it alight…
This song plays during the end credits of my favourite game of all time. I remember feeling incredibly exhausted, and almost devoid of life. What had I really accomplished? I had just slain a God who gave up his soul to give the world hope. An overwhelming sadness begins to hit you as reality begins to kick in. Followed by a feeling of curiosity, what if I’d just walked away? What then? It’s this music that accompanies your thoughts and your musings.
Dark Souls is staggering in scope and yet you can find yourself drowning in its depth.
It was a tremendously difficult task to put this into some form of order and, of course, there are so many great soundtracks out there that haven’t been included.
