The Best PS4 Games for 5 to 6 Year Olds

Finding suitable PS4 games for 5 to 6 year olds can be a difficult task.

After all, by the time children reach this age, they’re attending school, and no doubt think they’re older than they actually are. They’ll start showing an interest in more grown-up activities – and that often includes video games. Games for really young children may seem a bit babyish for them by now, and so what are the best games for 5 to 6 year olds?

Hopefully we can help you out. We’ve rounded up seven of the best PS4 games for 5 to 6 year olds, all of which have been played and vetted by us. These are all free of anything scary or inappropriate, and with varying difficulty levels they’re suitable for a wide range of abilities, too. Whether your little one is brand new to gaming or if they’ve been playing for a while, there should be something suitable here.

LEGO City Undercover

No list of the best games for 5 to 6 year olds on PS4 would be complete without a LEGO title. While we think any LEGO game makes the perfect choice for younger players, we have a bit of a soft spot for LEGO City Undercover. It doesn’t rely on any franchise, and has one of the best open world sandboxes, packed with so much to do.

Dubbed by many as ‘LEGO Grand Theft Auto’ (without the violence and language, of course), LEGO City Undercover is an open world game that sees players take on the role of police officer Chase McCain. Criminals are running amok in LEGO City and it’s up to him to save the day.

There are plenty of levels to jump in, but players are free to explore the city at their will, with a whole host of activities to take part in. Minigames, races, secret collectibles, Easter eggs – you name it, LEGO City Undercover has it. Better yet, it can be played entirely in co-op, so it’s perfect for siblings to enjoy together.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy A Big Adventure (1)

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is perhaps more difficult than the other games on this list. Heck, some of the levels even gave us, fully grown adults, a run for our money. But we still think this is one of the best PS4 games for 5 to 6 year olds. Why? Well, it’s simply gorgeous. Its colourful world, lovable characters and playful nature make it the perfect sandbox for young children to run around it.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if your kid doesn’t finish the level, or if they can’t get past that one pesky obstacle. The joy of Sackboy: A Big Adventure is simply in exploring and discovering. And with plenty of different levels to play, all with their own unique theme and setting, young children will have a blast simply moving Sackboy around the world. Even better, by collecting costume pieces, you can dress him up in a range of super-cool outfits. Our favourite is the lion outfit.

Minecraft

We don’t think we’ve ever met a 5 or 6 year old who doesn’t love Minecraft. It’s one of the biggest games on the planet thanks to its unwavering popularity with children. And it’s not hard to see why kids enjoy it so much: this open sandbox adventure game promotes learning, exploration and fun. Children as young as 3 have been known to enjoy Minecraft, but by the time your kid gets to five or six, they can begin to fully appreciate everything the game has to offer.

Whether they play solo or with friends or siblings, there’s so much to be done. They can go out gathering materials, placing blocks to create their own structures, or setting out on an adventure. There is a learning curve involved in Minecraft, and so it may take a while for younger players to get to grips with the mechanics. But give it a few months, and your youngster will be teaching you. It may be old news by now, but Minecraft remains to be one of the best games for 5 to 6 year olds on PS4.

Hot Wheels Unleashed

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2

Racing games are great for kids aged 5 or 6, but some are more suitable than others. Hot Wheels Unleashed, developed by Milestone, is perhaps the best. After all, what kid doesn’t love Hot Wheels cars? This game lovingly brings real-world Hot Wheels models to life, putting them in the game and allowing you to race with them.

Better yet, its tracks are incredibly mind-bending, packed with loops, twists, turns and various other obstacles. You can even build your own tracks, snapping together those iconic orange track pieces to create your own event. The downside is that controlling the cars isn’t always easy, and so younger players may need some practice before they stand a chance of racing against the CPU. Still, there’s a lot to love, and we think this is hands-down one of the best PS4 games for 5 to 6 year olds.

Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated

Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated

Spongebob Squarepants may have been around for over 20 years, but that absorbent and porous yellow chap is just as popular as he ever was. And Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated makes for one of the best PS4 games for 5 to 6 year olds.

A remaster of a game from 2003, Battle for Bikini Bottom sees players take control of Spongebob as he sets off on a 3D adventure. This is classic platforming at its finest; there are iconic characters to meet, plenty of stuff to collect, and a wonderful, colourful world to explore. Ultimately it doesn’t matter too much if children don’t complete the missions at hand – this is a great world to simply run around and explore. Jumping about has never been so much fun.

Untitled Goose Game

Untitled Goose Game sun hat

Come on: what kid wouldn’t want to play a game where you’re in charge of a naughty goose? Untitled Goose Game is a surprise indie hit from 2019, and while it wasn’t exactly designed to be a kids game, it’s more than suitable for them. Each level of Untitled Goose Game has a number of objectives to complete, but you can do them in any order. Or not at all, if you prefer. Simply running around the cute world, stealing stuff from local farmers and shopkeepers, is entertaining enough.

It’s that freedom which makes Untitled Goose Game one of the best games for 5 to 6 year olds. Not every child wants to work through a list of missions, and so simply waddling around parks and streets, seeing what mischief you can get into with a duck, may just be the perfect game for them.

Ben 10: Power Trip

Ben 10: Power Trip

Here’s another popular children’s TV series that has crossed over into the video game world. Ben 10: Power Trip is the most recent game from the franchise, and in our opinion, the best. And so if your youngster is a fan of Ben 10, this is one of the best games on PS4 for 5 to 6 year olds.

An open world game, Power Trip puts players in the shoes of the titular hero, Ben 10 himself. It’s a rather basic-looking game, but its blocky landscapes and simple backdrops are pretty enough to engage young eyes. Players are free to explore the world as they please, and it’s surprisingly large. There’s of course a story to play through – the evil villain Hex has to be stopped – but if kids would rather zip and zoom around the world freely, that’s fine too.

Editor in chief // Kim's been into video games since playing Dizzy on her brother's Commodore 64 as a nipper. She'll give just about anything a go, but she's got a particular soft spot for indie adventures. If she's not gaming, she'll be building Lego, reading a thriller, watching something spooky or... asleep. She does love to sleep.
