If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll no doubt remember Buzz, the quizzy sensation from the days of PS2 and PS3. It came with buzzers, it was voiced by Jason Donovan, it was basically perfection. Sadly, we’ve not had a new Buzz this generation; I imagine Jason Donovan is too busy doing something else (?) these days. Fortunately, the next best thing has just come along in the form of It’s Quiz Time. There’s no buzzers nor is there a Mr. Donovan. Instead, you play with your phone and have a sassy AI host called Salli. She’s a bit creepy, but she’s got a hell of a lot of quiz gold up her AI sleeves.

It’s Quiz Time requires you to download an app to your smartphone which lets you answer the questions. After inputting a bit of data about yourself, host Salli will personally address you by name (and sometimes make smart comments. If you’re the oldest in the room, prepare to be offended). For extra fun, input a rude name — we got pretty inventive, and nothing seemed to be out of Salli’s vocabulary.
Rich reviewed the game after we spent a lot of time battling it out, and here’s what he had to say:
“With over 25,000 questions and the hint that there’s more content to come on the game’s main menu, It’s Quiz Time is now the essential quiz game to play with friends and family on special occasions, and to stream online all year round. It has some minor issues that can cause you to raise an eyebrow, but its varied rounds and ample range of modes and features makes it a winner, and the fact that you don’t need a collection of controllers or buzzers to play it is just the cherry on top. Salli may not be quite the charismatic host that Buzz was, but her show is now the one in the prime time slot.”
So, yeah. With a wide range of questions and a choice of categories from video games, sports, to nature and TV, there’s something for everyone – just as long as everyone can use a smartphone (we’re looking at you, nan).
