Games You Should Play if You Like Fallout 4

With its huge open world, myriad of missions to complete, loot to collect and grotesque enemies to fight against, there’s nothing quite like Fallout 4.

Or is there? While Fallout 4 will always be a stand-out title when it comes to post-apocalyptic video games, there are plenty that scratch a similar itch. Whether you love Fallout 4 for its apocalyptic setting, its character development or its huge open world, there’s likely another game out there that you’ll love just as much. Or almost just as much.

There’s something wonderful about jumping into a new world full of customisation options, tonnes of enemies, and a few hundred buildings to go into and explore. And Fallout 4 isn’t the only game to offer that. We’ve put together a list of the best games like Fallout 4. So while we wait for an inevitable sequel, here’s a handful of games to play in the meantime.

The Division 2

A post-apocalyptic setting? Check. An open world, ripe for your exploring? Check. Endless amounts of enemies to take down and plenty of loot to pick up? Check, check. While The Division 2 might be a little more realistic and grounded, it’s still an easy choice if you’re looking for the best games like Fallout 4. You might not find any mutated monsters here – your enemies are typically human – but that doesn’t make them any less of a threat.

Set in Washington DC, you take on the role of a Division Agent; a special arm of the government sent to deal with the aftermath of a deadly virus that’s wiped out much of the population. You’ll patrol the streets of DC, taking out threats, exploring, finding better equipment, and generally having a whale of a time as you become hard-as-nails. As far as games like Fallout 4 go, it might not be set quite so far into a post-apocalyptic future (and there’s no dog companion), but it captures a lot of the same feeling.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

If you’re looking for a game that feels and plays just like Fallout 4, then how about one developed by the same company? Also from Bethesda is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Okay, so it might not be set in a post-apocalyptic future; instead Skyrim is firmly set in a fantasy world inhabited by dragons. But in terms of open world exploration and RPG elements, the games are two peas in a pod.

In Skyrim, players take on the role of the Dragonborn. You’re on a quest to defeat the World-Eater dragon known as Alduin. Unless you can stop him first, he’s poised to destroy the world. No pressure, then. With a huge world to travel around in at will, Skyrim excellently captures the freedom and sense of wonder that makes Fallout 4 so enjoyable. And so, if you’re looking for the best games like Fallout 4, Skyrim should definitely be on your list.

Rage 2

Rage 2 2 (1)

Both Rage 2 and its predecessor Rage are perfect for fans of games like Fallout 4. Rage 2 puts you in the shoes of protagonist Walker, tasked with surviving a mutant-inhabited world following a collision with an asteroid. All semblance of green in the world is completely gone and has been replaced by nothing but desert and stuffy cities. And the citizens you come across aren’t always the friendliest.

Rage 2’s combat is fast-paced, but quick to pick up. There’s also different types of cars that you can drive and a large load out of weapon options. Like Fallout 4, you can explore the world freely, but there’s also a pretty linear story to follow if you’d rather. Still, you’ll get more out of the game if you wander off the beaten path and choose to do some looting. It’s not as long or as big as Fallout 4, but captures much of the same feeling. It’s well worth picking up.

Far Cry: New Dawn

Far Cry New Dawn

A direct sequel to Far Cry 5, Far Cry New Dawn is an open world adventure that’s more like Fallout 4 than any other game in the series. Why? Well, it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world.

Following on from events of Far Cry 5 in Hope County, New Dawn picks up seventeen years after, when a nuclear event known as “The Collapse” has wiped out most of the world. Unlike Fallout, though, this apocalyptic world isn’t a barren wasteland; for the most part, New Dawn is luscious, green and vibrant. Nature has started to take over, making a vast and vivid landscape to explore.

Most importantly, Far Cry: New Dawn is full of high octane action, and a vast array of different weapons to equip your character with. The setting is gorgeous and the map is absolutely massive so there’s a huge amount of places to find and discover.

Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 casts you as one of four ‘Vault hunters’. Each character has their own skills and their own personality; whichever you choose, you’ll have a whale of a time playing as. It means you’re likely going to want to play multiple times though; each character feels very different to control. With a number of planets to explore, Borderlands 3 is the biggest game in the series yet, packing in over 50 hours of action. You’ll jump between them, exploring new areas and killing weird and wonderful enemies.

One of the other big elements of Borderlands 3 is loot. And this is one of the reasons it’s one of the best games like Fallout 4. Sure, you’ll be going around doing missions, upgrading your character and meeting dozens of hilarious NPCs, but you’ll also be collecting sweet, sweet loot. Chests are strewn about the world for you to find, filled with hundreds upon hundreds of different types of weapons. You’ve never known pure joy until you’ve lit a man on fire with a flame gun and heard him scream, “I SMELL DELICIOUS”.

Much more humorous and tongue-in-cheek than the world of Fallout 4, Borderlands still shares a lot in common with its barren environments, open mission structure and dozens of settlements to visit.
