The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

games coming out in may

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game developed by CD Projekt Red and initially released in 2015. In it, you play as Geralt, a Witcher who is looking for his missing friend Ciri.

Ciri is like a daughter to Geralt, and you feel the desperation in each step he takes as you play through the game. That being said, Geralt isn’t one to turn down a good side quest – and that’s why a full completion of The Witcher 3 will take you close to 200 hours. No matter how urgent finding Ciri may be, there’s always time for a 20-hour detour and a few rounds of the in-game card game Gwent.

With a magical setting, a huge world to explore and more side quests than you could imagine, it’s hard not to see why The Witcher 3 is so much like Skyrim. Both are cut from the same adventurous cloth, and fans of Skyrim are sure to find a second love in The Witcher 3.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 3-min

Available on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

If you replace its fantasy-strewn world for the wild west, Skyrim is very much like Red Dead Redemption II. Its main protagonist, Arthur Morgan, finds himself on the run. But in order to survive and thrive, he’s got to make some money along the way. That means taking on missions to earn a buck or two, and fighting gangs of ruffians with the hopes of coming out on top.

The real joy of Red Dead Redemption 2, though, is in its huge, expansive world. The wild west makes for a wonderful playground, and just like Skyrim, you’ll be compelled to explore all corners of this vibrant, living world. There might be a lack of magical creatures to face off and no undertones of magic, but if you’re looking for one of the best games like Skyrim, the huge adventure that awaits for you in Red Dead Redemption 2 will more than scratch that itch.

Fallout 4

Available on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

Hailing from the same developer, it’s no wonder that Fallout 4 has so much in common with Skyrim. The only real difference is one is set in a magical world, and another is set on a post-apocalyptic Earth. What you get up to in the nitty-gritty of gameplay, however, is very comparable.

In Fallout 4, you awake to find yourself as the sole survivor of Vault 111. Alone in a world destroyed by nuclear war isn’t the best situation to find yourself in, but needs must. Off you go on an epic adventure that’ll see you travel across a country ravaged by time and war. Along the way you’ll meet other survivors, fight against deadly and grotesque mutants and complete dozens upon dozens of side quests. How you approach the world is up to you, and just like Skyrim, the choices you make will shape your adventure. It might be a very different setting, but Fallout 4 is the perfect remedy for someone looking for another game like Skyrim.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn

Available on: PS4 and PC

Developed by Guerrilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn released in 2017 as a PS4 exclusive, but has since been ported to PC. Considered one of the greatest games to have ever come from PlayStation Studios, it places players in control of Aloy, a hunter in a world completely overrun by living machines.

In the game you’re able to use different elements to take out the machines and explore the massive map. You can play stealthily, taking out your enemies carefully and quietly, or buff yourself up to overpower them. Like Skyrim, it features a huge open world, packed with side quests and missions that you can tackle in whatever order you see fit. Its world is equally breathtaking, too; except Horizon Zero Dawn has the addition of mechanical beasts in which to engage in combat with.

If you’re looking for games like Skyrim, then Horizon Zero Dawn is worth your consideration. Its mindblowing open world, dangerous and intriguing creatures and intense storyline ensure it’ll fill an Elder Scrolls-shaped hole in your life. A sequel is available now, too. Horizon Forbidden West is available on both PS4 and PS5, and if you like Horizon Zero Dawn it’s a must-play.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Available on: Nintendo Switch

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took the world by storm when the title launched. It’s an action adventure game developed by Nintendo and it’s just so gosh-darn beautiful. You play as Link, who has just woken up from a 100-year nap. As usual, he finds himself tasked with defeating Ganon – this time in Calamity form – before he destroys the whole of Hyrule.

Breath of the Wild feels decidedly more grown-up than most other Zelda games. While it maintains much of the same magic, its new approach to a truly open world makes it feel like a more mature adventure. Players can literally tackle the game however they see fit; your progress is only occasionally halted if you’re not strong enough to defeat a new foe. Like Skyrim, it encourages you to explore, and you’ll find yourself coming up against a wealth of enemies. There are plenty of puzzles to tackle too in the 100-or-so Shrines dotted about the world, each offering you a useful reward.

Games like Skyrim don’t come much better than this.

Outward

Outward 1

Available on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

A huge open world that offers freedom, endless amounts of side quests, choices that affect your experience and magical foes to face? You’d be forgiven for thinking Outward simply was Skyrim based on that description, but it’s not. This huge RPG from Nine Dots studio does have a heck of a lot in common with Bethesda’s behemoth though.

Outward takes place in the vast world of Aurai. Imbued with magical powers, combat allows you to swing a sword or cast spells. You’ll be roaming beautiful open countryside looking for your next encounter – though you better be careful; the game features some stat management, so you’ll need to keep an eye on your energy and hydration levels.

If you’re looking for more games like Skyrim that perhaps are a little bit out of the ordinary, Outward might just be for you.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC

You can’t get a game more like Skyrim than one set in the same universe. The Elder Scrolls Online captures everything we love about the Elder Scrolls series – and turns the action into an MMO.

If you’ve been playing Skyrim, you’ll instantly feel at home in The Elder Scrolls Online. It’s a familiar world, with familiar controls and familiar gameplay mechanics. The only difference is that you can play with others. Team up to face the foes that lurk around Tamriel, or go it alone if you prefer. And just like Skyrim, the world is your oyster; you can go and do what you please – providing you’re strong enough to face whatever’s waiting for you, that is.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Available on: PS4, Xbox One and PC

Developed by BioWare, the Dragon Age series has been running for over 10 years. The latest instalment is Dragon Age: Inquisition, which released in 2014. (Uh, we’re about ready for another one, please!) The clue is in the title, really; with a name like Dragon Age, you know that this series is going to have a lot in common with Elder Scrolls. A fantasy world, magical powers and, uh, dragons. What more could you want?

Dragon Age: Inquisition puts you in the role of the Inquisitor, who has been given the very important task of saving the world. Thedas, the world in question, is very much like Skyrim; expect to explore beautiful environments and sprawling landscapes, scattered with NPCs to meet and enemies to fight.

While Inquisition is some years old now (again, just like Skyrim itself), its story and gameplay stands the test of time. If you want to lose yourself in an adventure that spans dozens, if not hundreds, of hours, then you certainly can’t go wrong with this.
